Theft or Larceny
Theft, or larceny, is defined as taking the property of another, without consent and with the intent to deprive the owner. In Wyoming, larceny is a misdemeanor if the value of the items taken is less than $1,000.00. If the value of the stolen property is greater than $1,000.00 the crime is a felony and carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison, a $10,000.00 fine or both.
Considered a property crime, often a conviction will result in probation and restitution to the owners of the property stolen.
Burglary and Aggravated Burglary
Burglary occurs when a person enters a home, garage, vehicle or other secured area with the intent to commit a theft or felony therein. While Burglary carries the same maximum penalty as felony larceny, you can expect the court to hand down a more severe penalty for a burglary conviction.
Aggravated burglary occurs when a person become armed during a burglary. Whether you bring a gun to the scene or find one at the scene, once you become armed the severity of the crime increases. The minimum penalty for aggravated burglary is five years in prison.
Robbery occurs when a theft is committed against a person by the use of a weapon or the threat of physical harm. Persons convicted of robbery are often sentenced to lengthy prison terms. Defense of someone charged with robbery is complex and requires thorough investigation and negotiation skills.
